Default C.R.S. - Chronic Restart Syndrome™

Well there I was, playing Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, when I suddenly decided that I wanted to delete all my saved games and start over again from the beginning. I did so, then I casually looked up the clock to find that I'd been working on that particular game for two hours.

I sighed, all that work was now gone, but I didn't like how my character was developing anyway. I started a new character, and as I fought my way through the Endar Spire, I began to grow sick of seeing the ship and enemies that I'd fought my way through only two hours earlier.

I sighed again, brought up the game menu, and quit to my Windows desktop. I sat and recalled all the times I've done this previously, in every single game I play. I don't even have a Guild Wars character at the moment, as I'm so sick of playing pre-searing Ascalon over and over just because I can't decide on a character that I like.

Does anybody else have this problem? Are there any other chronic restarters and elite newbies here? Do you know your way around the first few levels of any game, even stuff the developers probably forgot about, but have yet to complete the damn thing? Post here!

I have had this problem for a long, long time lol.....

I don't know it's like a curse I've picked up since playing EQOA on the PS2. I made one character and was really fond of that. After that every game I went to afterwards took many, many re-rolls. Like on The Matrix Online.....re-rolled about 11 times....many reasons of course.

The hair was wrong, don't like how this guy fights etc, etc....

As far as other mmorpgs....it's not been as bad. Had 2 characters in eq1, 2 in CoH, 1 in WoW, 1 in FFXI.

In EQ2 though....it's sad. I've taken a total of 23 characters to 15-19 before I deleted them over and over again lol....so many different reasons it's sad lol.

In fact I'd still be re-rolling if it wasn't for Guild Wars.....so far though I've only had one character. I just started a necro/monk not too long ago though. Only lvl 2 at the moment. I think what has stopped me at the moment is that mes, ele, nec look kind of goofy to me lol or else I'd be changing them up!

Don't feel bad though really....these things happen. In any game with character creation you want said character to look and behave in a manner you would like. So if it takes 2 or 20 re-rolls to achieve that then go for it. You're one playing so there is nothing wrong in doing it over til you make him/her exactly how you want.

The biggest thing that drew me in about Guild Wars is that it's not some secret race like it is in some online games...so re-roll until you get it right!

Ah, but there lies my problem. I can never be satisfied, I just have to start over and over and over again. Strangely, though, I never burn out a game so badly that I grow completely bored with it.

Its something that bugs me with Guild Wars, in WoW I started a alt of every single class and never got bored of it. In Guild Wars, you do it once and its done. Everything is always the same, the monsters spawn in the same place, you know exactly where to go after a mission.

I was helping some guildies with missions I had done 80+ hours ago and I was bored out of my mind. That kind of got me down.

The thing was, in WoW every single race had a different start point. So there was about 8 different paths to play from at the start. Me being a elite-newbie, it worked out great.

This is a real condition. I call myself a "professional lowbie". Every single MMORPG to date, I have started a full roster of chars, levelled them all to 10, 20 or so, then deleted them and restarted.

In WoW, I took my druid on one server (prior to moves) up to 25. Quit that server, started over, got to 15- moved... 18...moved... 13... moved. Then, I leveled 5 chars to 20, 2 to 10 and now the Druid is back up to 18 or so.

Though.... I haven't played in 2 weeks. Thinking of starting over when I get back to it!

Hehe.
(p.s. I'll start over after 3 months because I decide the name I chose for the character doesn't fit the style of the character's skills... I have this condition bad!! Bad, I say!

p.p.s In EQ (the original, not 2) I had a total of 62 characters, all reached no less than about 16, most 20- about 3 to 29 and 1 to 33- but in a year and a half of EQ, I never got above 33 because I would restart so often! )

Now I am glad I took a second look at this thread.

It's nice to know I am not the only one. But what does that say about us lol?

Are we doomed to be denied forever from the endgame lol? Simply because we can't make up our minds?

Maybe this is a very real condition that requires some sort of therapy. This thread should now become a support group! We need some sort of slogan though....

One more thing I'd like to mention though...what's weird is that it strikes in some games more than others. In EQ2 it was bad for me but in EQOA on the PS2 I didn't even think about it. There must be some sort of trigger that causes this....but what?

I too share the curse of the emphatic re-roller. Star Wars Galaxies almost made me insane with their one character per server rule. I would think of a new type of character and professions I'd want to try literally every couple of hours. "I want to roleplay a spice addict! Combat Medic/Smuggler is the way to go! No wait, I want to be a Tusken Raider! Rifle skills and 1h Blunts! Scratch that, I wanna be a droid assassin! Image Design and Droid Engineer! Nevermind, rebellious rockstar! Musician/Pistoleer!" Well, you get the idea. I spent more time at the character creation screen than I did in the game. I like trying every profession, look, weapons, armor, etc., but eventually the grind sets in on me and I get completely burnt out.

Same thing happened in City of Heroes. Fantastic game, I absolutely love super heroes. But I could never settle on a character type long enough and get burnt out really quick doing the same old low-level areas over and over. Add in the fact that I'm pretty bad at meeting people in game, so I end up soloing all the time and MMORPGs become a really brutal chore for me.

Guild Wars doesn't really have a grind, but I still end up rolling constant characters to see which combination I like the most and get tired of seeing all the same things in all the same places. I really really hate those stupid bugs that always pop out of the ground.

I don't think I've ever seen the "final level/end game/ascension into uberness" whatever thing in any MMORPG I've ever played. Luckily, there's always Solitaire.

OMG! I am so glad I read this thread - makes me realize I am 100% normal seeing as I do this in every game i play, whether it be online or offline. I just can't make my mind up what I want to play.. heh

I have never finished offline games such as Daggerfall, Morrowind, Baldur's Gate 1 & 2, IWD 1 & 2, SW:KOTR 1 & 2 ... why? Because I'd keep on restarting the character/group as I wanted to try something else! I wasn't bored of the games at all, they were still enthralling for me.. I just had a thought of another style/type of character/group/play that sounded more interesting to me... so I'd abandon my current game and start a new one..

heh, at one time I had something like 4 GB worth of backed-up save games.. when I decided to try something else I'd backup my current save games so that I could go back at some point and finish them... I never did ever get around to it... and ended up having to delete them when it was just too much... heh

As for online games.. I've never played SWG, KOH, WOW, EQ, etc as I don't have a CC.. booo.. but I have played in open beta's of games.. and in all of them I was constently changing my characters and class and such and doing different things. No that I thought any of my chars were "bad".. I'd just thought of something else to try out that sounded better or more fun... so off I'd go to try it out.

Heh, I remember one game I used to play only had a choice of 4 base character classes, each of which had 2 branching classes you could take later.. I started one char, remade that char 3 times as I kept changing my mind about what weapon/skills to use.. then decided to start a new char of another class.. remade that char 4 times.. and so on.. got to the point i'd played the game for like 4 months and had NO characters over lvl 50 while everyone else i knew who had been playing for same time or even less had at least 3 chars over lvl 60... with at least 1 of their chars at like lvl 100.. LOL... and there I was still chopping and changing the characters I was playing and even contemplating deleting one to re-start it as something else..

and then GW came along.. and surprisingly I've only remade my char 3 times so far... haven't even done the 1st mission in GW yet.. since I've re-started my char b4 doing it... hehehe.. hopefully I'll start on it tomorrow.. and won't decide to restart.. heh... ahhh..

But glad to hear i'm not the only one who does this.. oh, and thank you to anyone who actually read my whole post

I had this exact same problem in Star Wars Galaxies, and I didn't get my first master profession until roughly a year after signing up. After then, however, I discovered the key to powergrinding in Star Wars Galaxies as most professions could literally be mastered in a couple of days. But Even then, when I could master in no time, I'd still find myself re-rolling for silly reasons (character race/gender, house too cluttered, bank too full, too many badges in my character's bio, etc.)

There's an interesting new point... Do any of you ever gain tons of items on a character, and rather than sort it all and sell what you don't need, simply delete the character? I've noticed that one reason I re-roll is because I hate the clutter and like a "fresh start", in fact, that's one reason I reformat my computer so much. Obsessive and compulsive neatness, to the point of wiping everything completely and starting over.

We should try to find the real symptoms of a chronic restarter / elite newbie / emphatic re-roller... List the reasons you do such things...

I think that my symptoms would be as follows: -

1.) Obsessive Neatness: My character / party has too much stuff / tasks, it's too disorganised. I will delete my saves / character and re-roll again just for the sake of it being all fresh and new. (Same with computer configs.)

2.) Compulsive Nitpicker: I make a new character / party, and in a short period of time, I already hate something about it. Name / race / gender / appearance / skills / items / alignment, if one little thing doesn't suit my mood, the character is gone.

3.) Multiple-RPG-Personality: I've made a new character, and I've played it for a while, then I suddenly decide that the character doesn't suit my mood at all, to the point where I can't be bothered to play it much longer. If I'm playing a heroic warrior and battling the forces of evil with my mighty sword, then I will suddenly want to play a demonic necromancer and drain the life from my victims. This results in an immediate re-roll.

I've never experienced number one, but two and three are more than familiar.

Though my compulsive nitpicking is usually reserved for the character creation screen. In City of Heroes, I would usually spend the better part of an hour trying to get the costume look and colors just right. In any game, I usually spend an hour or two trying to get the perfect name. Then it becomes all for naught when I realize I would rather play a different personality-type character and it gets flushed.

I think part of the reason I re-roll a lot is because I usually can't decide on which profession/class/skills/whatever I have the most fun with. I usually want to try everything, so it tends to make holding onto a character even more difficult. Especially with limited character slots.

I know I restarted Baldur's Gate II seven times before I decided on a Ranger and finished the game but this... Wow, Principa.
I had the same problem in KotOR. I started evil then decided I don't want to be evil (was still on Taris then). Played good until Kashyyyk. Restarted as evil and finished the game. Started as good. Now I can't play on Taris because I am tired of it.
I have 4 characters in Guild Wars I am satisfied with two of them (deleted my level 20 W/N because I picked name and appearance for this combination yet couldn't work arround it). I believe this is an achievement.

I just got to Dantooine on a new character, going pure light-side. Let's see how long it takes for this one to get deleted. He is a soldier/guardian at the moment, but I'm already feeling the itch to go scoundrel/sentinel. And here lies my predicament... I could simply start a new game as a scoundrel/sentinel, and not delete my soldier/guardian... But I know already that I'd load on Taris and think "PFFFFT, I was just on Dantooine." and hit the exit game button.

Ok as for me I really have problems with 2 and 3.

I can't tell you how many barbarians have died just so Oziamus Amadi could finally win with a uber color for his beard in some other game.

As for 3 again I agree with that too. 100%. Ok I wanna be an Inquisitor so I can burn halfling sinners! Damnable things with pie! whoo! No one expects the Freeport Inquisition!

But then I decided naw...it's like I'm evil so I'll go Templar. Nice! No wait it's boring.

Then I decided I prefer to have a shadowy past and be smooth with the ladies. So again re-roll to a swashbuckler...eventually lol.

Don't get me started on the number of times I re-rolled morrowind and neverwinter nights characters lol!

My Personal Opinion: Its just a game. I dont like how my character looks, since he looks like a hobo with robes in GW. But i like his skills, and im gonna get him some nice Pyromancer Robes. Why dont you guys just buy another account or something so you can have many characters?

When I make a character, I stick with it. I might hate some of the things about it, but what keeps me going is that I don't want to redo everything I've already done.

Instead of a multi-character player, I tend to be a person who plays the same character all the time. Almost no change ever.

For WoW, I played a Mage for the betas, then when it was released, I played Mage again right up to 59. Made a Druid only because I didn't like dying all the time when the PvP stuff came out. (I play on a PvP server.)

*Shrugs* For Anarchy Online, I created an Adventurer and eventually realized that I made some mistakes assigning her points around. I couldn't bring myself to delete her after all the time I put into her. Eventually stopped playing, came back later with an expansion pack, made a shadow player, played it for a while...

Oh well. I think I'm the opposite of you people. LoL. I hate redoing things and force / push myself till I reach the end.

I tend to spend absolutely ages in character creation, getting the look just so. Once i'm satisfied there it'sinto the game wehre the character almost invariably looks sligthly different and after a big deep sigh it's back to the character creation screen to tweak a bit more

GuildWars drives me mad only allowing four characters - at least in SWG you had a host of servers to create on (even tho I only played one char 99% of the time! ). Here i've deleted my 4th character around a dozen times levelled them to five or six and gone back to my main.

As a side note - most unusually my original character is not my main!!! My original was a W/Me - i later made a N/Me and loved it soo much I took her to 20 without eevn looking at another character! Shocking I know.

I'm now mostly playing a Mo/R.
